Review of the FME user meeting 2010

The sixth FME user meeting took place in Münster in the week of March 8-12, under the new name of FMEdays 2010.

Also new was the way the meeting was organised, now featuring a modular and internationally oriented structure. The actual FME user meeting itself (the MEET module) was framed between optional activities, comprising an opening event (START module) and a training unit (STUDY module). The unique Factory Hotel in Münster served as a perfect backdrop for the 5-day FME technology event.

The START module was attended by approximately 80 people in 11 English and German ‘lightning talks’, and proved to be a successful kick-off to the week. The MEET module, the core FME user meeting, was naturally the main focus of the week’s events, and included a total of 32 presentations, attended by altogether 135 people from 15 countries. Attendees identified the joint presentation by the two cofounders and presidents of Safe Software, Don Murray and Dale Lutz (see photo) as one of the main highlights. In their rousing opening presentation, the ‘dynamic duo’ introduced the innovations that have been incorporated in FME 2010. As interesting and professional as ever, the two leaders presented an outlook of their future point of focus: FME 2010 Desktop with the central features 3D/BIM and raster data processing plus FME Server with the3 features security and services.

Following the rich and varied programme, participants made use of the relaxed lounge atmosphere to take part in networking and to discuss the events of the day.

The STUDY module that concluded the FMEdays 2011 comprised four training units on the subjects of FME Server (English and German), Python Scripting and Rasters.

All in all, the FMEdays 2011 was regarded by the extremely satisfied participants, partners and sponsors as a successful event with a varied programme. The success of the new concept was reflected not only by the large number of international participants but also in the great amount of extremely interesting user and partner presentations and the large rate of participation in the training sessions.

We are already looking forward to the next FMEdays, which are set to take place at the end of 2011. Images, presentations, and other information are available at www.fme-days.de.
